Knife Production Processes And Areas Of Application

SUMMARY

The design of the blade is probably one of the most important stages of this process. Remember that you will be spending many hours getting the knife to be perfect, so it's worth spending some time to plan what you're going to do. The better you plan and decide which direction you will be going from the start, the better your knife will be. The second most important step in making a knife is to decide on the material you want to use. Different types of steel are better suited for certain jobs than other types and there are several important factors to consider when choosing your steel type. Hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance and achievable sharpness should all be considered when deciding which material is the right one for your blade forging. The most technical and important process in knife making is the heat treatment stage.  The material is prepared for forging by being heated to a degree where it is not magnetic (750 ℃). Forging can be thought of as the shaping of a blade. It is made by heating the material you intend to use to a very high temperature so that it is malleable. It can then be shaped with a hammer on an anvil. Shapes can be incredibly simple or very complex, using pattern welding to come up with a product that is both effective and decorative. The blade is then subjected to grinding and heat treatment in order to make it last longer and of higher quality. Then the process is finished by smoothing and polishing with a blade coating.
